What is a Northern Lighthouse?
A Northern Lighthouse is a specially-designed rooftop beacon equipped with a colour-changing LED lighting system that communicates information about the conditions that cause auroras in the skies above Yellowknife.
DESIGN • Northern lighthouses are made of concrete, with a metal top and glass features. Each lighthouse is hand painted with a green stripe to reflect the most common colour of the aurora.
PURPOSE • Standing just 48 inches tall, these little lighthouses have a big job to alert the community when active space weather is in the forecast. For generations, lighthouses have communicated important messages to those who traveled at night. In Yellowknife this tradition will continue as Northern Lighthouses relay information about overnight space weather conditions to residents and visitors alike from August until May – months with enough darkness to view the Northern Lights above Yellowknife.
